Mount Union

The University of Mount Union will be launching a Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) major in the fall of 2019. This program will be the first of its kind to become available at a Northeast Ohio private institution.

Students who major in RMI will be part of the university’s Department of Business, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs. Graduating from an accredited program can give job seekers the qualifications they may need for a job, and with the insurance industry estimated to need 29,000 new employees in the state of Ohio by 2024, the RMI major at Mount Union is a great choice!

About the Major

The RMI major will help students develop the skills needed to analyze risk exposure, and build on analytical and critical thinking skills. The coursework will include both traditional classroom learning and real-world experiences, and according to Mount Union, students “will have ample opportunities for internships with businesses in the local area.” Plus, Mount Union’s small class sizes mean students can have more personal interactions with faculty.

Insurance Professionals Panel

To give students a better understanding of insurance and what majoring in RMI means, program director Linda Ruse recently held an Insurance Industry Professionals Panel, in which individuals working in various areas of the insurance industry came together to answer questions and discuss the growing field of insurance.

One of the participants was Amanda Peltier, Vice President of Education and Workforce Development at Ohio Insurance Institute. As part of her presentation, she had a student take our career survey to find out what area of insurance would fit their skills and interests. She shared our 30 different career pathways which displays the various career opportunities available in insurance. Peltier also talked about how insurance industry jobs in Ohio pay more than other private sector jobs; the average annual salary for an Ohioan working in insurance in 2017 was $74,500 which is 53 percent higher than Ohio’s average private sector annual salary of $48,572.

Additionally, three current Mount Union students, who will be graduating in May and already have jobs lined up at National Interstate, spoke about their experiences as interns with the company. After the event concluded, Ruse shared that two more students enrolled in the RMI major.
