Have you ever thought that a career in insurance would be nothing more than an old fashioned, door-to-door salesperson position? You’re not alone. University of Akron graduate Tyler Vaughan thought the same thing. Tyler, who now works as a Small Business Accounts Underwriter at Westfield Insurance, went into college pursuing a degree in Financial Management, and graduated with a degree in Risk Management and Insurance instead. We caught up with Tyler to see what made him decide to switch majors, and what it’s like working in the insurance industry today.Tyler Vaughan

About Tyler

Tyler grew up in Wadsworth, Ohio, which is just a 20-minute drive from Westfield Center, OH, where Westfield Insurance is headquartered. Growing up, he was aware of Westfield’s presence, but never really knew what the day-to-day operations of the company involved. In high school, Tyler was always interested in finance, and after graduating from Wadsworth High School in 2015, he knew he wanted to pursue a degree in finance. He chose to major in Corporate Financial Management at the University of Akron.

How did you get interested in insurance?

Tyler credits Dr. Jill Bisco and her Intro to Finance course with changing his career path. Dr. Bisco was promoting a business fraternity called Gamma Iota Sigma, and offered free pizza and extra credit to students who attended an informational meeting about it. Tyler didn’t need more than that to convince him to check it out. Tyler explained, “Gamma Iota Sigma is the international risk management, insurance and actuarial science business fraternity. At that time, Dr. Bisco was trying to form a chapter of this organization at the University of Akron. As soon as she spoke regarding her passion and time in the industry, I knew it was something I was interested in. I never knew how many opportunities there were in the industry, and it ultimately showed me my perception of insurance was wrong (in a good way).” Tyler volunteered to help build Akron’s chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, and went on to serve as both Vice President and President of the fraternity.

What is it like working in insurance?

Tyler told us that the most surprising part about working in insurance is how fun it can be! “No day is the same,” according to Tyler, “and you interact with others daily.” Tyler also said that while his position is mostly a desk job, he does get to do some travel when visiting agents and he enjoys building those relationships as well. When asked what he likes best about working in the insurance industry, Tyler says two things come to mind: “First, specific to my position – I control my book of business to a point. I control what new business I am writing, and I enjoy the continuous learning. Second, I really enjoy the networking aspect of our industry.” Tyler is active in insurance organizations and enjoys connecting with professionals and college students alike.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in insurance?

Finally, Tyler would like to leave anyone considering a career in insurance with this: “Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Never say no (when reasonable) because you never know what an opportunity may result in. This industry is great, and the opportunities are endless.”
