College Spotlight: Ohio Dominican University
Now more than ever, earning a degree online is becoming a viable option for many people, as colleges and universities move to virtual learning as a way of adjusting their curriculum for COVID-19. But online classes have been around for a long time, and have always offered a convenient way for non-traditional students, working students, and parents to earn a degree or further their education when the traditional college experience is not an option for them. Did you know that Ohio Dominican University’s online Insurance and Risk Management program is one of the top-rated online insurance programs in the country? Read on to learn more about ODU’s program and all that it has to offer!
About the Program
Ohio Dominican University (ODU) offers two Insurance and Risk Management programs– a traditional Bachelor of Science program, or a certificate program, which is completed entirely online. Neither program requires any previous degrees or credits, and graduates are eligible to waive two parts of the eight-part Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) exam, if that is something they wish to pursue. ODU partners with well-known industry companies in Ohio such as Nationwide Insurance, Encova Insurance (previously Motorists Insurance), MAPFRE Insurance, and Century Insurance, to guarantee job interviews before graduation from the program, and provide students with internships and other professional opportunities. Grady Campbell, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Encova Mutual Insurance Group, enjoys working with ODU because of their “incredible sense of what the employment trends are” in the various aspects of the insurance industry.
What Students Have to Say
In an interview with ODU, Erin Hamm ’16 described her job as a Senior Business Analyst at Nationwide Insurance. She was able to find the job through a career fair hosted by ODU, where she connected with Nationwide employees. Erin said that Carol Blaine, lecturer of Insurance and Risk Management, played a key role in her ability to connect with industry professionals before and after graduation. When asked why students should consider a career in insurance, Erin emphasized the variety of jobs within the insurance field and the fact that there will be thousands of jobs opening up in Ohio within the next few years.
